Rudy Gay trade to Raptors official, Tayshaun Prince, Ed Davis to Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies officially finalized a deal that sent Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors, Jose Calderon to the Detroit Pistons, and Tayshaun Prince and Ed Davis to the Grizzlies.

Rudy Gay has officially been traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Toronto Raptors in a three-team deal that also included the Detroit Pistons, according to a team statement released on Wednesday evening. The Grizzlies will receive forwards Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye from Detroit, along with Raptors forward Ed Davis.

Detroit will take on the expiring contract of Toronto point guard Jose Calderon. The Raptors, meanwhile, will receive big man Hamed Haddadi from Memphis, along with Gay.

The trade news moved quickly on Wednesday, as multiple reporters said that Toronto and Memphis had finally found another partner to get a deal done.

The Raptors' wish to shed Calderon didn't make sense for the Grizzlies, who already have starting point guard Mike Conley and a sound backup in Jerryd Bayless. Involvement from a third team also hinged on Memphis' wish to get a small forward in return for Gay.

Prince fits that bill, though the Dallas Mavericks were also in the picture because of their willingness to bring on Calderon, according to Marc Stein. Vince Carter would have been sent to the Grizzlies in that scenario, but ultimately it appeared that the Mavericks were not willing to give up the veteran swingman.
