Marvin Williams injury: Jazz forward to sit 3 games with knee pain

The Utah forward has been struggling with the injury over the last week.

USA TODAY Sports

After missing a game against the Clippers on New Year's Eve and playing only 16 minutes against the Mavericks on Monday due to inflammation in his right knee, the Jazz have decided to shut down F Marvin Williams for the next three games to give him time to respond to treatment.

Williams, whom they acquired in an off-season deal with the Hawks, has started 30 games this season, averaging 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists on 44/35/80 shooting.

An athletic 6’9 245 forward, Williams has never lived up to being drafted No. 2 overall by Atlanta, but the 26-year old has settled into a role as a “3 and D” small forward who spots up off the ball.

Utah will likely use some combination of DeMarre Carroll, Gordon Hayward and Alec Burks to fill Williams' spot in the rotation over the next week. In their victory over Dallas on Monday, Hayward responded to the bigger role with his best game of the season -- 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists on 8-14 shooting.
