The Zen Master was in line for the Los Angeles Lakers' position as early as 2012-13 when L.A. fired Mike Brown after a 1-4 start to begin the season. Instead, general manager Mitch Kupchak selected Mike D'Antoni to coach the new-look Lakers.
When the Brooklyn Nets fired Avery Johnson in December, Jackson was again rumored to be a candidate for the position given the team's talented roster and position in the Eastern Conference.
He left Los Angeles amid a relatively volatile situation, as he had a well-documented difference in philosophy with the team’s front office and president Jim Buss.
It was assumed Jackson would need a relatively ideal situation before returning to coaching, after he left the Lakers following an unsuccessful playoff run in 2010-11.
He appears to have moved to the next phase in his life as he proposed to longtime girlfriend and Lakers executive Jeanie Buss over the Christmas holiday.
