Pau Gasol injury: Lakers big man out vs. Spurs with concussion symptoms

Lakers forward Pau Gasol will not play against the Spurs on Wednesday night due to a concussion. Gasol hopes to play Friday against the Thunder.

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers announced on Tuesday that Pau Gasol would miss Wednesday night's game against the San Antonio Spurs due to a concussion suffered in a Sunday loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Gasol was reexamined by neurologist Dr. Vern Williams before the Lakers' loss to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday, but was "not cleared to resume playing basketball." Williams will reevaluate Gasol on Thursday in advance of the Lakers' game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. Per NBA concussion policy, Gasol must reach his "neurological baseline" set earlier in the season in order to play.

This injury is the latest setback in a season full of them for the Spaniard. Gasol has missed nine games this season, with knee tendinitis accounting for eight of those games. The Lakers have gone 3-6 without Gasol in the lineup, but both he and the team have not fared much better when he has played. Gasol is averaging career lows in points and field goal percentage as he has struggled to get comfortable in Mike D’Antoni’s offense.

With Gasol and Dwight Howard out against the Rockets, D'Antoni turned to Robert Sacre and Darius Morris in the starting lineup. The Lakers' starters got off to a hot start, but things fell apart as the game wore on. There is no word yet on whether the same starters will be used against the Spurs.
