Rodney Stuckey injury: Pistons guard to undergo thumb surgery

Stuckey broke a bone in his thumb in his own car door and needs surgery.

Tom Szczerbowski-US PRESSWIRE

Detroit Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey will miss Thursday night's preseason game against the Miami Heat after breaking a bone in his thumb while closing a car door, the team announced.

Stuckey’s thumb reportedly got stuck in the door jamb of his vehicle Wednesday afternoon, and the guard broke the distal phalanx (the bone that makes up your finger tips) in his right thumb in the process.

No further details of the accident have been revealed. There is no timetable for Stuckey’s return just yet. He underwent an x-ray Thursday morning to determine the injury, and will undergo surgery to repair the fracture Friday. After the procedure, the Pistons should have a better idea of when Stuckey can return.

Fans of professional Detroit sports teams are no strangers to freak injuries suffered by athletes in their vehicles. The Detroit Lions are currently dealing with the loss of wide receiver Nate Burleson, who crashed his vehicle and broke his arm while trying to save a sliding box of pizza from hitting the floor below his passenger seat. We'll see whether an equally ridiculous story emerges (and of course, here's hoping that Stuckey has a speedy recovery).
