Trey Burke injury: Jazz rookie suffers broken finger

In Utah’s preseason loss to the Clippers in Salt Lake on Saturday, the Jazz’s starting point guard Trey Burke broke his finger. He is out indefinitely.

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Trey Burke, the lottery pick Utahans hope will be the next great Jazz point guard, broke his index finger on his right hand in the first quarter of Utah's Saturday loss to the L.A. Clippers. The Salt Lake Tribune's Steve Luhm reports that Burke will see a specialist on Monday, who will determine a timetable for Burke's return.

Burke told reporters his finger hit another player’s hand while running a pick-and-roll. Burke re-entered the game for much of the second quarter after breaking the finger, but had trouble dribbling and shooting.

The problem for the Jazz is that point guard is the team's most shallow position -- Burke was picked specifically to address that. Fringe NBA veteran John Lucas III and fringe NBA youngster Scott Machado are the team's other point guards.

Luhm reported that if Burke will miss extensive time, the Jazz will likely look to acquire another point guard. ESPN.com’s Marc Stein suggests that Utah has been interested in Bulls point guard Marquis Teague. Utah also has any number of valuable assets to swap out for higher-profile point guards, if Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey is interesting in more than a base stopgap.
