Corey Maggette will retire if he doesn’t make Spurs roster

The 33-year-old swingman said that he will call it a career if he doesn’t make the final 15-man roster in San Antonio.

Fourteen-year NBA veteran Corey Maggette told the San Antonio Express-News' Jeff McDonald that he will retire should the San Antonio Spurs cut him before the regular season.

The Spurs were apparently the only NBA team to offer the swingman an opportunity this summer.

The 33-year-old Maggette does have a slim shot at making a 15-man roster that must be decided upon by opening night. San Antonio has 14 guaranteed contracts, leaving one spot open, but the team could also decide not to fill the roster to the brim. Also fighting for a roster spot in the preseason are center Marcus Cousin, forward Dan Nwaelele, and guards Courtney Fells and Myck Kabongo.

Kabongo is expected to join the Spurs’ D-League team in Austin, which he could do without being signed to the Spurs roster. But that would not allow him to move between the parent and minor league clubs at will unless he’s signed to a 10-day contract or two during the season.

Maggette played in 27 minutes during the Spurs' preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. He had 10 points, three assists and two rebounds.

The 6’6, 225-pound small forward has career averages of 16 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
