Spurs waive Corey Maggette, expected to retire

Corey Maggette will not make the Spurs’ 15-man roster and could be headed for retirement.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs announced that they have waived veteran forward Corey Maggette, which could mark the end of his career. Just two days ago, Maggette reflected on the prospect of not making the Spurs' 15-man roster as a non-guaranteed contract and told Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News he would retire if he didn't make the final cut.

Maggette played in just 18 games last season for the Detroit Pistons, averaging 5.3 points on 35 percent shooting. Both were career lows for the 14-year veteran and former first-round draft pick out of Duke.

The Spurs extended an invite to Maggette in search of extra help at small forward behind Kawhi Leonard. With plenty of mileage on his body and a game that heavily relied on athleticism, it was a long shot for Maggette to find a role within the team without a consistent outside shot. Maggette has missed significant time throughout his career and his health was a cause for concern for the Spurs, according to Jared Zwerling of Bleacher Report.

If this is the end of the road for Maggette, it’s best to reflect on the 2001 Slam Dunk contest, where he did a full front flip into a dunk:
