Suns hoping to reach contract extension with Eric Bledsoe

Phoenix Suns general manager Ryan McDonough said on a local radio station the team is involved in contract-extension talks with guard Eric Bledsoe.

The Phoenix Suns might not know if guard Eric Bledsoe is a point guard or how much of his potential is left to be tapped, but general manager Ryan McDonough told Arizona Sports 620 that the team is interested in extending him. Talks between the player's agent and the team have occurred, and McDonough is hoping an agreement is reached with the guard before the Oct. 31 deadline for players on their rookie contracts.

“If we’re not able to work out a deal (by Oct. 31), we would start next summer with Eric as a restricted free agent, but obviously we’re hoping to get something done before that,” the general manager said.

Bledsoe was traded this offseason from the Clippers to the Suns and is in line to start alongside point guard Goran Dragic.

Bledsoe averaged 8.5 points, 3.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds last season with the Clippers. No matter how the rotation plays out in Phoenix, Bledsoe will be playing more than his 20 minutes per game that he garnered behind Los Angeles point guard Chris Paul last year. Because of that, the production is not only projected but expected.

McDonough admitted projection is involved in dealing with a player like Bledsoe, but the opportunity to get a deal done rather than wait until the guard is a restricted free agent next summer could be worth it. Though the Suns could match any offer thrown Bledsoe’s way after the 2013-14 season, they could avoid finding themselves in a bidding war with other teams.
