Danny Granger injury: Calf strain could keep swingman out of Pacers’ opener

The calf strain suffered by Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger is worse than initially thought.

Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

The Indiana Pacers shut down Danny Granger for the rest of the preseason because of a calf strain, but now it seems the forward's recovery timetable could be extended into the regular season. According to Pacers.com's Scott Agness, coach Frank Vogel said Granger is likely to miss the first regular season game on Oct. 29 against the Orlando Magic.

Vogel said Granger will be watched over carefully on a day-to-day basis, and it could take a bit of time to re-strengthen the calf.

Indy Cornrows: More on the Pacers

Lance Stephenson should fill in the starting lineup almost seamlessly after developing when Granger missed nearly all of last season because of a knee injury. Still, the news is a setback in Indiana because Granger was showing signs of his old self this preseason. He had scored in double-digits in two of his last three games, including an 11-point performance last Friday against the Chicago Bulls.
