Spurs finalize non-guaranteed deal with Josh Howard

Josh Howard is trying to find his way back into the NBA, and the San Antonio Spurs are willing to take a stab at reviving his career.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs continue their search for a backup to small forward Kawhi Leonard, and a surprising new option could come in veteran Josh Howard. The San Antonio Express-News reported this week that the Spurs were working to sign Howard to a non-guaranteed deal and San Antonio officially announced the signing Friday.

The other options available haven't been kind to the Spurs considering they waived small forwards Sam Young and Corey Maggette during the preseason.

San Antonio could waive Howard before the regular season and designate him as a member of the team’s D-League affiliate in Austin. Howard could then give San Antonio a versatile scoring option if he proves that he’s fit with the Austin Toros, but the 10-year veteran is coming off a January surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. It was the second ACL tear in three years -- in 2010, Howard tore his left ACL.

Pounding the Rock: More on the Spurs

Howard spent his first six years in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks and, after his rookie season, was a consistent double-digit scorer. He still holds a career average of 14.3 points per game, too, despite struggling with injuries in the last four seasons with Dallas, Washington, Utah and Minnesota. Last year, Howard played in 11 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves and averaged 6.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
