NBA news roundup: Kings talk extensions with Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson

Greivis Vaquez and Patrick Patterson could garner contract extensions from the Kings, and Danny Granger has been ruled out of the first two Indiana Pacers games.

It's decision time for the Sacramento Kings. Point guard Greivis Vasquez and forward Patrick Patterson could end up in the starting lineup come opening night, but each player's contract is up for an extension.

Sacramento extended fellow 2010 draft class member DeMarcus Cousins for four years and $62 million, and though Vasquez and Patterson surely won't garner extensions of that size, they could very well be viewed as important pieces of the puzzle.

From Jason Jones of the Sac Bee:

“We’re still looking at things and evaluating before making a decision,” said general manager Pete D’Alessandro. “... I think there’s some spirited conversations going on about all the guys near the deadline.”

If the Kings don’t agree to extensions with either Vasquez or Patterson by the Oct. 31 deadline, they can offer qualifying offers to make the two restricted free agents next summer. Additionally, Sacramento will decide on whether or not to pick up point guard Jimmer Fredette’s 2014-15 option.

Granger out Pacers’ first two games

Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger will be held out of the first two games of the season as he rehabs a strained calf, reports Pacers.com's Scott Agness. The Pacers play the Orlando Magic on Oct. 29 and the New Orleans Pelicans the next night, meaning the soonest Granger could return is Nov. 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Indy Cornrows: More on the Pacers

The news means Indiana will, as it did last season, turn to Lance Stephenson to start. The end of the Pacers' wing depth has changed from a year ago -- Gerald Green was traded to the Suns and Sam Young wasn't retained, leaving Chris Copeland, rookie swingman Solomon Hill, shooting guard Orlando Johnson and veteran Rasual Butler as potential candidates to earn wing minutes behind Stephenson and Paul George.

Rockets waive Camby

Houston will reportedly waive center Marcus Camby, who underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, reports Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears. Out two to three months, Camby's career could come into question. The 39-year-old has been productive when he's been healthy, but that hasn't been often.

Camby played in just 24 games last season with the New York Knicks and dealt with plantar faciitis, among other issues, throughout the year.

Grizzlies, Davis not close on extension talk

The Memphis Grizzlies reportedly had interest in extending little-used forward Ed Davis, who came to the team in the trade that shipped Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors. ESPN's Marc Stein reported the Grizzlies and Davis' representatives had discussions, but USA Today's Sam Amick tweeted Sunday that an agreement before the Halloween deadline would be "a long shot."

Davis could see a much more significant role this season under first-year coach Dave Joerger, and in the long term is viewed as veteran Zach Randolph's successor. That likely gave him some reason to ask for a sizable extension from his rookie deal, but on the other hand, Memphis is going off the evidence of little production -- though of no fault by Davis himself.

76ers’ Young preparing for trade

It's no secret the 76ers are building for the future, and because of that forward Thaddeus Young isn't ducking the possibility he could be on the way out of town. Young told The Delaware County Daily Times that he is prepared to move on, even if it'll hurt.

“Right now, this is my family and this is my home for the past seven years. If that day comes, it comes,” Young said, following the Sixers’ practice at PCOM. “I can’t worry about it. I can’t stress myself out about it. You pack up. You have a family and have to go to the next city.

Philadelphia waives Williams and Lawal

The Philadelphia 76ers waived undrafted rookie swingman Rodney Williams and former second-round draft pick Gani Lawal, reports Philly.com.

Liberty Ballers: More on the 76ers

Williams averaged 10.1 points and five rebounds in his senior season at Minnesota. Lawal played in six preseason games and was a second-round pick of the Phoenix Suns in 2010.
