Celtics suspend Jared Sullinger for season opener

Boston will be without the forward when they open the season because of his legal troubles over the summer.

The Boston Celtics have suspended second-year player Jared Sullinger for one game due to his role in a domestic violence allegation, reports Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports. Sullinger will miss the Celtics' season opener on Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors despite the charges being dismissed after the victim refused to testify.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge released an official statement, citing Sullinger’s failure to “meet the high expectations” the organization holds for every employee as grounds for suspension.

Sullinger pleaded not guilty to three charges stemming from the incident and was released on $5,000 bail after turning himself in. The prosecution pushed to convict Sullinger despite the victim, his longtime girlfriend, wanting the charges dropped.

Sullinger averaged six points and 5.9 rebounds per game through his rookie year, but played only 45 games after undergoing season-ending back surgery. He averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game through the Celtics’ preseason and is expected to be a key player in the teams’ frontcourt.
