After a tumultuous year of putting off a return while a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, center Andrew Bynum is finally ready to step back onto the court. The Cleveland Cavaliers' offseason free agent signee was medically cleared and will be active for Wednesday's season opener against the Brooklyn Nets, the Akron Beacon Journal's Jason Lloyd reports.

Bynum just began playing five-on-five in practice and will only see restricted minutes. The 7'1 center won't be in the starting lineup but will come off the bench to play a single stint, Cavs coach Mike Brown said.

Bynum hasn't played in an NBA game since May 21, 2012 as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. After sitting out all of last season after the Lakers traded him to Philadelphia as a key to the Dwight Howard deal, chronic knee issues only allowed Bynum to return to full practice a few weeks ago.
The 26-year signed a two-year, $24.5 million deal with numerous protective measures this offseason. To protect the team should Bynum’s knee issues become a major issue again, the second year of the contract is a team option and only $6 million of the first year’s value is guaranteed.
Update: Bynum is expected to play about 15 minutes vs. the Nets.
