Grizzlies to sign Quincy Pondexter to 4-year extension, per report

The 25-year-old plays a key role off the bench for Memphis.

The Memphis Grizzlies are expected to ink forward Quincy Pondexter to a four-year contract extension before Thursday's deadline, according to Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal.

Update: The Grizzlies confirmed the extension Thursday, though they did not disclose financial terms.

Pondexter is coming off the most productive year of his career in 2012-13, when he averaged 6.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per game. The 25-year-old shot a career-high 39.5 percent from three-point range.

Pondexter also enjoyed a nice playoff run last year, and he was especially good against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. While the Grizzlies got swept, Pondexter averaged 15.3 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 53.7 percent overall and 48.0 percent from deep.

Pondexter is expected to once again play a key reserve role for Memphis this season. In the Grizzlies’ season-opening loss to the Spurs on Wednesday night, the 6’6 forward had 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting and 2-of-4 from three in 22 minutes of action.

Down the road, Pondexter could take the place of Tayshaun Prince in the starting lineup. Prince is 33 years old and his contract is up after the 2014-15 season.

Ed Davis, Pondexter's teammate, was also a candidate for an extension, but Tillery reports an agreement with the Grizzlies is unlikely as of yet since the two sides are still too far apart.
