The Sacramento Kings have chosen not to pick up their 2014-2015 option on Jimmer Fredette.

Fredette, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2011 draft, is a victim of circumstance and of his own limited production. He had a poor rookie year in 2011-2012, averaging 7.6 points on 39 percent field goal shooting and 36 percent three-point shooting in 19 minutes per game. Fredette had trouble adjusting from being a college superstar to an NBA role player and balancing his scoring instincts with his responsibility to get his teammates involved.
In Fredette’s sophomore season, he fared better when he actually got onto the court, scoring 7.2 points on 42 percent shooting from the field and 42 percent from behind the three-point line in just 14 minutes per game. He still struggled to defend quicker guards, but he scored 18.4 points per 36 minutes and quietly showed he could provide instant offense as a combo guard in a reserve role. It just looks like there’s not enough room for him in Sacramento.
The Kings already have a starting point guard in Greivis Vasquez and their sixth man, Isaiah Thomas, plays the same position. They have an undersized shooting guard in Marcus Thornton in the starting lineup and a few months ago they drafted another score-first guard in Ben McLemore as well as point guard Ray McCallum. Fredette got a DNP-CD in Sacramento's season opener on Wednesday, so this wasn't much of a surprise.
