Tyreke Evans injury: Pelicans guard out 1-2 weeks with sprained ankle

The Pelicans guard should be ready for the start of the regular season.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

New Orleans Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said Monday night that guard Tyreke Evans will likely miss one-to-two weeks with a sprained ankle, according to John Reid of The Times-Picayune. If that timetable holds true, Evans will be ready for the Pelicans' regular season opener on Oct. 30 against the Indiana Pacers.

Evans injured his left ankle early in the second quarter of the Pelicans' preseason opener against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night. Evans sprained the ankle when he landed awkwardly on the foot of a Rockets player after a running shot in the lane. The guard had to be helped to the locker room by the Pelicans' training staff.

Evans had gotten off to a strong start before the injury, scoring seven points on 3-of-5 shooting in 10 minutes of action off the bench.

It’s good news that the injury to Evans isn’t serious, but it’s unfortunate that one of the Pelicans’ prize offseason acquisitions is already dealing with this issue. With several key new pieces in place, the Pelicans could have really used this preseason to work out how Evans would fit in the rotation, but that will have to wait.

Those kinks will now likely be worked out in the regular season, which could lead to some increased growing pains for New Orleans.
