Kings ‘gauging’ whether to acquire Knicks’ Iman Shumpert, according to report

The New York Knicks aren’t averse to trading guard Iman Shumpert, and considering a deal with the Denver Nuggets is seemingly going nowhere, a new team with interest might be emerging.

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Knicks aren't involved in any negotiations to trade guard Iman Shumpert, but they are certainly willing to investigate any offers. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Sacramento Kings are one team "gauging how Shumpert might fit in."

Sacramento would need to decide how Shumpert fits with a bevy of shooting guards that includes Marcus Thornton and rookie Ben McLemore. Guard Jimmer Fredette, whose rookie option was not exercised this summer, could be part of a trade -- he has reportedly been on the block and it could be an interesting swing for the Knicks. Fredette's family openly hoped he was drafted by New York after working out there in 2011.

Rumors of a Shumpert trade got heavy earlier this week when the New York Daily News was first to report that the Denver Nuggets and Knicks were involved in talks that would have swapped Shumpert and Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried. However, it's become clear that Denver wants more in return and won't be trading Faried if Shumpert is the only piece coming back its way. The Nuggets would additionally need draft picks coming their way.

Sactown Royalty: More on the Kings

Stein reports more teams believe New York will trade Shumpert, the 17th overall pick in the 2011 draft. Shumpert is averaging eight points and five assists per game for the Knicks, but the return of shooting guard J.R. Smith and the emergence of rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. could make Shumpert more expendable by the day.

Shumpert is arguably New York’s most tradable asset, and the team seems willing to part with him if it means shoring up a roster hit by frontcourt injuries and depth issues.
