Randy Wittman uses profanity to describe Wizards defense

The Wizards head coach threw the season’s biggest rant so far just two games in.

The Washington Wizards have started 0-2 with losses to the Detroit Pistons and the Philadelphia 76ers and head coach Randy Wittman is pretty peeved about it already. Here's what he had to say about the loss in his postgame press conference, from SB Nation Wizards blog Bullets Forever:

“Well, you tell me what you thought the problem was. You watched the game. Commitment to f****** playing defense. It’s what it is,” he said. It’s what it boils down to, all right? It’s a thing our guys haven’t learned and I’ve got to figure out a way.”
He would go on to elaborate:
“You see it coming out of the locker room. You’ve got to respect the game and your opponent. We came out in the first half and got after it. We created turnovers, held them to 40 percent shooting, and then in the second half, there was absolutely none,” he said.
“And I’ve got to figure it out,” he said later. “That’s obviously the first question. I’ve got to figure out how to get these guys to play the right way for 48 minutes, that’s what it boils down to.”

Wittman led off his press conference with the expletive, which has been conveniently scrubbed from the video of it posted on the Wizards’ site.

Wittman isn't wrong, it should be said. The Wizards were a Top 5 defensive unit last season, and even without Emeka Okafor, most of the other pieces are still there. While Nene was out of the lineup Friday night. John Wall, Bradley Beal, Trevor Ariza, Martell Webster, Marcin Gortat, Trevor Booker and Kevin Seraphin are all at least marginally capable defenders.

The 76ers scored 74 points in the paint and shot better than 60 percent from the field in the second half. The Wizards had a double-digit lead in the first half and didn’t trail until 6:28 remained in the fourth quarter, but the Sixers battled back and won by seven.

Wittman is generally considered to be a coache on one of the hottest seats this season, after owner Ted Leonsis gave the team a mandate that the team make the playoffs.
