Cavaliers won’t send Anthony Bennett to D-League, according to report

The No. 1 pick’s career has gotten off to a terrible start, but no demotion to the D-League is forthcoming.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Cavaliers have ruled out sending struggling No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett to the D-League, according to Bob Finnan of The News-Herald. There had been rumors that Bennett would get sent to the D-League to try and find a rhythm as he continues to work his way back into game shape from offseason shoulder surgery, but the team prefers he practices against NBA players.

Bennett has been an utter disaster thus far for the Cavs, averaging 1.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game. The rookie is shooting a woeful 13.5 percent from the field and his PER is a miniscule 0.93. Naturally, his shot chart isn’t pretty:

Bennett has already heard some boos on his home floor, but it’s way too early to give up on the youngster. The shoulder surgery did set him back, and while he has been worse than anybody could have expected, it’s not like he’s getting time to work through his issues.

Bennett may very well turn out to be a bust, which certainly would be bad news for a Cavs team that has made some questionable high draft selections over the past few years. But let’s not go there just yet.
