Matthew Dellavedova will start for Cavaliers against Pelicans

Cleveland will start the rookie guard ahead of Dion Waiters.

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Matthew Dellavedova will make his first-career start on Friday against the New Orleans Pelicans, reports The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the surprising move by coach Mike Brown means 2012 fourth overall pick Dion Waiters will continue coming off the bench.

Searching for answers this week, Brown started veteran C.J. Miles at shooting guard on Wednesday against Washington, but because of leg soreness, Miles only played three minutes before leaving what would be a 98-91 loss. Waiters came off the bench and scored 11 points but went 2-for-13 from the floor.

Dellavedova meanwhile put in a career effort Wednesday, scoring nine points and grabbing three rebounds while going 3-for-6 from the floor -- all from behind the three-point line.

The move could be a message to Waiters, who has averaged 13.1 points and 2.3 assists per game, but is shooting just 37 percent through 10 games played.

Cleveland, which sits at 4-8 on the season, had a players-only meeting that reportedly involved an altercation. Waiters, who missed two games with flu-like symptoms, needed to deny that he and his teammates had a discussion that came to blows.
