An MRI revealed that Derrick Rose suffered a torn meniscus in the Chicago Bulls’ loss to the Portland Trail Blazers at the Moda Center, according to KC Johnson of the Chicago Tribune. Rose will have surgery, at which point a clearer timetable will be established. However, Rose is almost certain to miss a significant amount of time.

The 2011 NBA MVP injured his right knee in Portland on Friday. A Saturday MRI revealed the extent of the problem: he has a torn meniscus and will need surgery.

The Bulls have listed Rose as being out “indefinitely.”
The injury occurred in the third quarter, when Rose’s knee buckled after a backdoor cut.
Rose missed the entire 2012-13 season recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee. This current injury is in his right knee.
The Bulls are now 6-5 and in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Rose, 25, had struggled to shake off the rust early this season, averaging just 16 points and four assists per game while shooting 35 percent from the floor. Rose averaged 25 points and 7.7 assists per game in his MVP 2010-11 season.
Chicago is currently without starting shooting guard Jimmy Butler, who sprained a toe. He is expected to return within a week or two.
