Pau Gasol hasn’t talked contract extension with Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers’ longtime frontcourt anchor knows his future in Los Angeles is uncertain after Kobe Bryant signed his contract extension.

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers just inked Kobe Bryant to a two-year contract extension expected to be worth $48.5 million that has raised eyebrows, but his longtime running mate Pau Gasol has not discussed an extension with the team, Gasol told reporters during shootaround Tuesday. Gasol was happy to hear Bryant received a lucrative extension but acknowledged this only raises more uncertainty about his future with the team and whether he will be approached about a contract extension.

Gasol was traded to the franchise in 2008 and was key in a run that featured three straight NBA Finals appearances and back-to-back championships.

The Lakers are currently 7-7 on the season. 33-year-old Pau Gasol is averaging team-highs in both scoring (14.3 points per game) and rebounding (10.6 rebounds per game), though he’s also shooting a career-low 43.1 percent from the field.

Los Angeles will be under the salary cap this summer but Bryant’s large contract extension has left little room for the team to add talent during the next two free agency periods. Gasol’s $19.3 million contract expires this summer and will put a $20.3 million cap hold on the Lakers unless they renounce his Bird rights, according to ShamSports.
