Former Suns guard Kendall Marshall to give D-League a shot

The former lottery selection of the Phoenix Suns has put himself in the running to be picked up by a D-League squad.

Kendall Marshall, the 2012 first-round pick of the Phoenix Suns, will enter his name into a pool and become eligible to be picked up by a D-League team, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Last year's 13th overall draft pick was without a team when the Washington Wizards waived him after acquiring the point guard in the trade that also sent Marcin Gortat, Shannon Brown and Malcolm Lee to the nation's capital.

Going the D-League route rather than accepting offers in China and Europe keeps Marshall’s chances of returning to the NBA alive. If a D-League team picks him up in a waiver process next week, Marshall would be available to NBA squads in need of a backup point guard.

Bright Side of the Sun: More on the Suns

After playing 48 games as a rookie for the Suns, Marshall, whose athleticism and lack of a jump shot limited him, found himself unwanted by a new Phoenix front office that didn't draft him. Phoenix acquired Eric Bledsoe in the offseason, who thus far has split time with point guard Goran Dragic, but the Suns elected to retain backup Ish Smith as the third option.
