Jason Kidd says he ‘probably shouldn’t have’ intentionally spilled drink

One spilled drink and $50,000 later, Kidd discusses the recent incident at the end of Nets-Lakers.

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Despite his greatest efforts to avoid the topic, Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd spoke briefly Saturday about intentionally spilling a drink on the court during Wednesday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Explaining that the move was "about trying to win and those guys in that locker room," Kidd added it wasn't something he would repeat, via ESPN New York:

“Paul [Pierce] got a great look, but the league fined me for something that I probably shouldn’t have done,” he said. “We’ll move on.”

On Thanksgiving Day, the league announced a $50,000 fine for Kidd's stall tactic, which happened near the end of a tightly contested game between the Nets and Lakers. With 8.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Kidd bumped into second-year guard Tyshawn Taylor and spilled his drink. Prior to that, Kidd can be seen on video seemingly asking Taylor to hit him.

Kidd got his play stoppage, but the Nets still lost 99-94 to Los Angeles. Understandably, Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni wasn’t thrilled with the move afterwards.

“I knew he was going to get caught,” D’Antoni told reporters on Friday when asked about the incident. “You can’t do that. That’s crazy. He can’t do that. It’s cute for a lot of people, but you can’t do that.”

Through 16 games this season, the Nets are 4-12 under Kidd.
