Suns vs. Spurs final score: San Antonio avoids upset, 99-96

The Spurs needed to rally in the final minute to avoid a big loss at home to Phoenix.

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Tony Parker hit a pair of key baskets in the final seconds as the San Antonio Spurs avoided a major upset to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night, 99-96. It was a hard-fought victory for the defending West champs as Phoenix continues to be a surprisingly-challenging opponent early this season.

Despite playing at home, where they’re typically as unbeatable as any team in the league, the Spurs struggled to put away a young Suns team. Parker needed to hit two baskets, including the go-ahead score with 31 seconds remaining, to snatch away Phoenix’s last-minute lead.

Coming close to going to 4-1 on the year, the Suns continue to surpass expectations. Miles Plumlee, nearly cast aside as a draft bust before the season, sustained his breakout performance with 15 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes. Markieff Morris, the backup forward, was the Suns' real star, scoring 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting with 12 rebounds.

Playing on the road against an experienced opponent like San Antonio proved to be too much for the Suns, however. Parker finished with 20 points and six assists, while Danny Green added 19 points and four blocked shots.
