Charlotte Bobcats sign Chris Douglas-Roberts, waive James Southerland

The Bobcats have called-up wing help from the D-league.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Charlotte Bobcats have waived rookie James Southerland to create a roster space for Chris Douglas-Roberts, the team officially announced. Details of the contract were not immediately available. Bobcats head coach Steve Clifford spoke about the roster move during the team's shootaround Wednesday morning and praised his "toughness and experience," reports Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.

Douglas-Roberts has been playing for the Dallas Mavericks' D-league affiliate, the Texas Legends. He's currently averaging 18.7 points per game while shooting 43.8 percent from beyond the arc and 47.2 percent overall over six games.

The New Jersey Nets drafted Douglas-Roberts in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft, but the forward has not found a niche in the NBA. He has also played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks for short stints, and most recently played for the Los Angeles Lakers during Las Vegas Summer League and the New York Knicks during the preseason. He did not make either team and returned to the Legends.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is expected to miss four-to-six weeks after breaking his hand and Jeff Taylor is suffering from a heel injury, diminishing the team's wing depth. Southerland was an undrafted rookie brought in as a development project, playing in a single game for three total minutes through the team's first 21 games.
