Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, the son of former NBA star Nick Van Exel, was sentenced to 60 years in prison Friday after he was found guilty of murder on Thursday in Texas, the Associated Press reports.

Nickey Van Exel was convicted of shooting his longtime friend, Bradley Eyo, in 2010. Van Exel and Eyo, according to Van Exel, were playing around when the shooting occurred. The body of Eyo was later moved from the house where the shooting occurred. In 2010, Van Exel’s defense attorney said in 2010 that he ‘panicked’ and that’s why the body was moved near a lake outside of Dallas.
Van Exel's father, who currently works for the Atlanta Hawks, took the stand and talked about his son's friendship with Eyo. He also reportedly broke down while apologizing to Eyo's family.
“I’m really sorry to the Eyo family. Nobody should have to go through something like this. Nobody,” Van Exel’s dad said, according to the AP, as he looked at Eyo’s family members.
