Dwight Howard trade rumors: Lakers deny talking to Celtics

Despite a report by CBS Sports, the Lakers deny they’ve discussed a Dwight Howard trade with the Celtics.

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak told ESPN reporter Chris Broussard that the team has not engaged in trade discussions with the Boston Celtics involving Dwight Howard.

“I just spoke w/Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak about supposed D12-for-Rondo trade talks w/Celtics. He denied it strongly,” Broussard tweeted.

Kupchak's refutation came after Ken Berger of CBS Sports reported Friday that the Lakers and Celtics had had 'preliminary' discussions about a trade involving Howard and injured Boston point guard Rajon Rondo as the principals. Rondo is out for the year with a torn ACL. Because Howard's salary ($19.5 million) is significantly more than Rondo's ($11 million), more players would have to be involved for a deal to work.

Howard, who is in the final year of his contract and will be a free agent after the season, told reporters on Friday that he’d been assured by Kupchak that the team is not shopping him on the trade market.
