Billy Hunter fired as NBA Players Association Executive Director

Hunter had been the NBPA chief since 1996.

NBA Players Association executive director Billy Hunter was removed from his role Saturday after a meeting among player representatives from all 30 teams in Houston for the NBA All-Star Game, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports.

Player representatives voted in a “decisive manner” to oust Hunter from his role at the meeting, during which Miami Heat star LeBron James reportedly spoke of the need to overhaul the union.

Hunter, who had led the players’ union since 1996, has been on an indefinite leave of absence since earlier this month among charges of nepotism and other charges -- for instance, one common point of contention between Hunter and the union has been his 2010 contract extension, which may or may not have been properly approved by the union.

In January, the independent law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP released an eight-month report that stated Hunter did nothing illegal, but the players’ union should still look into whether he was best to continue on the job. Hunter went on the offensive this week, creating a blog and releasing a response on Friday to the report.

Upon the charges of nepotism in NBPA hiring practices, Bloomberg reported on Jan. 30 that Hunter fired his daughter and daughter-in-law.
