NBA standings: Lakers creeping back into West playoff picture

The Lakers have gotten themselves back in the Western Conference playoff picture with three-straight wins. Over in the Eastern Conference, there’s a logjam behind the Heat.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

After winning their third-straight game on Sunday, the Los Angeles Lakers moved to 28-29 and are just 2 1/2 games behind the Houston Rockets for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Lakers will have a chance to move to just two games back when they face the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.

The Golden State Warriors have righted the ship of late, winning three-straight games and holding onto the sixth seed, two games ahead of the Utah Jazz and one and a half games behind the Denver Nuggets for the fifth spot. The San Antonio Spurs have a stranglehold on the West with a three-game lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Over in the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat are running away with things, increasing their lead to six games after their 11th-straight victory on Sunday. However, there’s a bit of a logjam for seeds two through six, with only three games separating the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls.

At the back end of the East playoff picture, the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks are currently not in much trouble of losing their spots. However, they do need to keep an eye out for the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors are four games behind the Bucks, but charging hard since the Rudy Gay deal.
