Mike Krzyzewski confirms he’s stepping down as Team USA basketball coach

Duke Blue Devils head coach and two-time Olympic champion coach Mike Krzyzewski reiterated on Tuesday that he would not return to Team USA.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski said on ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike in the Morning” that he won’t return as a head coach of Team USA following his season with the Duke Blue Devils. Though Krzyzewski had long been expected to step down after his second gold medal victory in the 2012 London Olympics, some believed as recently as a few weeks ago that he could return to build upon his 62-1 record at the helm, according to The Associated Press.

But the Duke head coach put that talk to rest on Tuesday. He added that USA Basketball will choose his replacement this summer as the team prepares for the 2014 World Games in Madrid.

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers and San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich are the two candidates widely expected to be under consideration by Team USA chairman and president Jerry Colangelo.

Krzyzewski, 65, won two gold medals in 2008 and 2012, and led the Americans to another championship in the 2010 World Games despite the team lacking a single member of the Olympic squad. He was the first hire of Colangelo, who was brought on to fix a struggling national squad that came in sixth place during the 2002 World Championships.
