NBA trade rumors: Cavs could look to trade Marreese Speights

Worried that Speights might opt out after the season, the Cavs could look to trade their newly acquired big man before the deadline.

At stops with the Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies, Marreese Speights has proven to be a useful rotation player. Still, both teams ultimately traded him for little in return.

Since he was acquired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies in January, Speights has once again been productive. He's averaged 15.4 points and nearly seven rebounds per game in five games with Cleveland, both significantly better than his season averages with Memphis. Still though, Speights might once again be on the move.

Bob Finnan, who covers the Cavs for the Morning Journal in Ohio, reports that Speights is expected to opt out of his contract at the end of the season, which could lead the Cavs to try and get some return for him before free agency.

“The consensus around the league is that Speights, who has a player’s option on his 2013-14 season, will undoubtedly become a free agent,” Finnan writes. “That’s why the Cavs are expected to entertain offers for him at the Feb. 21 trade deadline.”

Speights, a first round pick in 2008, was acquired by Cleveland with Josh Selby, Wayne Ellington and a future pick last month.
