Chris Kaman says concussion protocol is ‘the stupidest test ever’

Dallas Mavericks big man Chris Kaman is not too pleased about sitting out as his concussion symptoms persist.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

More than a week after falling on his noggin during practice and sustaining a concussion, Chris Kaman's head still isn't right. Not only did the Dallas Mavericks center tell the Dallas Morning News that he still had a headache from a Jan. 28 fall, but on Tuesday he went on to say that the concussion protocols in the NBA were the "stupidest test ever."

“I got to take it tomorrow,” he said. “It’s the stupidest test ever. For so many years in the NBA, they never had to do that stuff and now they come up with all that concussion protocol crap. It’s not cool, but it is cool, I guess. It keeps people safe. I just try to do the right things and wait until I can pass the test.”

Even if Kaman takes and passes the test on Wednesday, he likely won't play in that day's game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Kaman, who has now missed the last four games, did admit to the Dallas Morning News that he's aware of the risks involved when dealing with concussions.

Though there’s obviously a bigger risk to play with concussions in football, head injuries are still a concern in the NBA and a misunderstood medical issue.

But, Kaman maintained, there’s a balance between safety of players and their desires to play. The latter appears to be higher in priority for Kaman than the former. Or, maybe he’s just upset because of that headache.
