Pau Gasol injury: Lakers star heard ‘pop’; MRI scheduled Wednesday

Nothing about the latest injury to the Lakers’ star sounds good.

Los Angeles Lakers' center Pau Gasol said he heard a pop in the bottom of his right foot when he re-aggravated a previous injury late in the fourth quarter during the team's 93-82 win vs. the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night.

"I tweaked my fascia in the first half," said Gasol. "I felt a pop in the bottom of my foot in the fascia, and I couldn't get up... I'm waiting for the crutches so I can walk out of here."

Gasol suffered the injury at the 4:21 mark when he appeared to land awkwardly on Nets center Brook Lopez's foot. Though he tried to play through the initial injury, he eventually had to leave the game with under three minutes remaining.

A loss of the former All-Star could spell trouble for the Lakers, who are also without fellow center Dwight Howard as he continues to sit out with a right shoulder injury. The depleted frontcourt found a way to defeat the Nets to notch the Lakers' sixth win in seven games, and it appears they may need to do more of the same in the near future.

Gasol’s injury is especially troubling given the circumstances and the Lakers’ 23-26 record. Losing him long-term would be a devastating blow to their playoff chances.

“I don’t want to be optimistic or pessimistic. So I’ll see what happens tomorrow and what the doc tells me in Boston,” he added. “And then like I said, we’ll go from there.”
