NBA trade rumors: Spurs may be interested in Al Jefferson

Are the San Antonio Spurs a frontrunner to land Utah Jazz big man Al Jefferson?

Russ Isabella-US PRESSWIRE

Al Jefferson is rumored to be a target of the San Antonio Spurs, according to Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com. That doesn't mean it's going to happen.

However, Sheridan reports that sources tell him the Spurs are frontrunners to land the Utah Jazz center. What is known is that the situation could be worked out, and it's easy to find a reason for why the two teams would get the deal done. Sheridan says San Antonio leads like "they are frontrunners like Secretariat was in the 1973 Belmont Stakes," but how serious the discussion is remains to be seen.

The context makes sense. The Jazz have a loaded front court with Derrick Favors, Paul Millsap and Enes Kanter in tow, and the team might want to get a return for Jefferson, who becomes a free agent after this season. On the other side of things, the Spurs might want a true center to play with Tim Duncan.

The Spurs could move Tiago Splitter and Stephen Jackson to the Jazz, and perhaps include a backup point guard as well -- either Patty Mills or Nando de Colo could fill Utah's need for another point guard. That said, Utah would have to make enough room on the roster.

And Sheridan reports that the Utah and San Antonio front offices are very close, “incestuous” even. That may make them compatible, but there is an open question as to how much truth there is in this rumor -- especially considering how well both franchises historically have kept information leaks to a minimum.
