NBA playoff picture: Lakers take No. 8 spot in West over Jazz

With their win over the Bulls on Sunday, the Lakers now hold a half-game lead over the Jazz for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference.

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers took over sole possession of the eighth seed in the Western Conference thanks to their 90-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Sunday.

The Lakers now sit at 33-31, one-half game ahead of the Utah Jazz, who have lost four games in a row. The road ahead for the Jazz is not getting any easier, with five of the next six games coming against teams currently in the playoff picture.

Los Angeles is also just one game behind the Houston Rockets and two behind the Golden State Warriors, so there's still a very good shot at grabbing the sixth seed in the West. If they reached that No. 6 spot, the Lakers could be staring at a first-round matchup against the crosstown rival Clippers. The Clippers are currently one game ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies for the third seed.

At the top of the conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder have pulled to within one game of the San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder will have a chance to catch the Spurs when the two teams meet on Monday night in San Antonio.
