Paul Pierce out to rest against Bobcats

The Boston Celtics will rest forward Paul Pierce against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Paul Pierce will miss his first game this season. The Boston Celtics will hold out their forward to rest him as they face the league-worst Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday night, according to team play-by-play voice Sean Grande.

The forward has not missed any of the Celtics' 62 games this year, and with his spot on the bench, Denver Nuggets guard Andre Miller and Boston's Jason Terry are the oldest players in the NBA who have not missed a game in the 2012-13 season, Grande reports.

Jeff Green will start in Pierce's place against the Bobcats.

Boston's decision to rest Pierce doesn't appear to be a random act. The Celtics play the second game of a road back-to-back on Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors, and holding out the 35-year-old Pierce makes sense against the 13-50 Charlotte squad. That said, the Bobcats pulled off an upset against Boston on Feb. 11, winning 94-91.

Head coach Doc Rivers told Boston.com that while he usually likes to shorten rotations at this time of the year, that won't be the case with the aging Pierce, Terry and Kevin Garnett.

Pierce is averaging 18.7 points, 4.6 assists and 6.4 rebounds this season.
