Kurt Thomas injury: Knicks’ big man has stress fracture, season likely over

New York Knicks big man Kurt Thomas could be done for the year with a stress fracture in his right foot, leaving the Knicks’ frontcourt desperately thin.

The NBA’s oldest player could be done with his career.

At the very least, New York Knicks big man Kurt Thomas will likely not play again this season after an MRI revealed that the 40-year old has a stress reaction around a stress fracture in his right foot. First reported by the New York Daily News' Frank Isola, the Knicks confirmed on Tuesday that Thomas will probably sit out the rest of the year.

Isola reported on Wednesday that Thomas had been playing through what he thought was likely a break.

Now that he is out, New York's already-thin frontcourt has taken another hit. Center Tyson Chandler will miss a week or so with a neck injury, Isola also reported, and now the Knicks will rely upon midseason signee Kenyon Martin to front the load in the post.

In a 90-83 win against the Utah Jazz and its large frontline on Monday, Martin played at center alongside 6'8 combo forward Chris Copeland and guard Iman Shumpert. Marcus Camby, at 38 years old, logged seven minutes as the only true center available on the roster. Meanwhile, Thomas played 27 minutes off the bench in what could be his final game this season, but New York gave up 19 offensive rebounds to the Jazz.
