John Wall could sign a max contract with Wizards, according to report

“Signals point” to the Washington Wizards giving point guard John Wall a max contract.

USA TODAY Sports

John Wall is likely going to get a max contract from the Washington Wizards this summer, according to CSN Washington's J. Michael. He reports that sources indicated that the team views Wall as deserving of a max contract as his rookie deal nears its end.

Michael wrote that “signals point” to Wall being viewed as a max player, persons with “knowledge to the situation” told him. And of course, Wall believes he’s deserving of such a commitment.

“If they believe I’m their franchise guy, that I’m the max player that I feel that I am, they’ll do what’s best for them,” Wall told CSN. “I feel like they believe in me. My coaches and my organization believe in me.”

Wall is making $5.9 million this year while still on his rookie contract, but a max offer would give him 25 percent of the Wizards total salary cap. He can sign a four-year deal as an extension, but there is also the ability for Washington to give their star a five-year deal with what the collective bargaining agreement calls a “designated player” tag.

The point guard in his third year missed the first 33 games of the year with a knee injury, but his return has led to a vast improvement for the Wizards in the win-loss columns. Washington is 18-15 with Wall in the lineup, and he’s finally begun to show his abilities as an elite lead guard after struggling initially following his return.

Wall has season averages of 15.6 points and 7.5 assists per game, but he has scored 23 or more in four of his last five games.
