Dion Waiters injury: Cavaliers’ rookie out at least a week with knee soreness

The Cleveland Cavaliers will rest guard Dion Waiters for a week then determine additional steps after finding a piece of loose cartilage in his knee.

USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters will miss the next week while resting and receiving treatment on his left knee, the team announced on Tuesday. The rookie left during the first half of a Monday night game against the Indiana Pacers with knee soreness, and an MRI revealed a loose piece of cartilage in the knee.

After a week of sitting, the team will re-evaluate Waiters’ condition. It is possible he will need to undergo arthroscopic surgery, depending on his status, the team release said.

Waiters, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, is averaging 14.7 points and 3.0 assists per game for the Cavs this season. He has recently become more of a focal point within the offense as Cleveland has limped on without starting point guard Kyrie Irving, who will miss at least a few more weeks as he recovers from a sprained shoulder.

Cleveland moves through a rough patch of the schedule that includes a game on Wednesday against the white-hot Miami Heat and a visit to the Houston Rockets on Friday.
