Rudy Gay injury: Raptors could shut down swingman for season

The Toronto Raptors could shut down forward Rudy Gay for the season because of a back problem.

USA TODAY Sports

A lingering back issue might cause the Toronto Raptors to shut down forward Rudy Gay for the remainder of the season, according to a report. Head coach Dwane Casey said he would have talks with others in the organization about calling it a season for their star player, according to ESPN.

“I would say that it’s something that will be talked about sooner rather than later,” Casey said.

On Saturday, Gay was receiving treatment on his back issue that has kept him from three games this month, and the seven-year veteran didn't travel with the Raptors on a trip to New York, where Toronto fell to the Knicks, 110-84. It was the second game of a back-to-back with New York. In the first game of the series in Toronto, Gay left because of a sore back after playing 14 minutes and going 2-of-7 from the floor.

The Raptors have 12 games left on their schedule this season, and at 26-44, it makes sense for the franchise to rest Gay, who was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster trade this season.

Gay is averaging 18.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists on the year.
