Snell can retain his college eligibility by withdrawing from the draft by April 16, but Geoff Grammer of the Albuquerque Journal reports that the 6’7 junior is unlikely to return to the team. Even if he does not make a decision by April 16, he has until the NBA’s early-entry deadline of April 28 to officially withdraw his name from the draft. But in that scenario, he would not be able to return to New Mexico if there was a change of heart.
Snell had a solid season for the Lobos, averaging 12.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.5 rebounds. The junior shot only 42.2 percent from the field, but he did make 39.0 percent of his three-pointers. He really made a name for himself in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, especially with his 21-point performance in a win over UNLV in the championship game.
However, Snell could not keep that momentum going into the NCAA Tournament, scoring just nine points on 4-of-11 shooting as No. 3 New Mexico was stunned in its opening game against No. 14 Harvard.
In terms of his NBA prospects, Snell is athletic and has good size for a shooting guard. His issue is consistency, and that’s why ESPN’s Chad Ford projects him as a late first-to-second-round pick if he stays in the draft.
