Metta World Peace injury: Lakers’ F out 6 weeks with meniscus tear

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without Metta World Peace, who will undergo a procedure to fix a torn meniscus in his knee.

USA TODAY Sports

Metta World Peace’s knee injury is worse than expected. The Lakers’ forward will have surgery and miss six weeks, likely knocking him out for the rest of the season, the team announced.

The six-week timetable will put World Peace on the sideline through the first round of the NBA playoffs should the Lakers hold onto their current eighth-place position. The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz are each a game behind Los Angeles in the Western Conference standings.

Before doctors determined the torn lateral meniscus in World Peace's left knee would require surgery, Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni was already pessimistic about a regular-season return for his starting small forward. He told ESPN Los Angeles' Dave McMenamin that he expected Jodie Meeks to take over the starting spot in the Lakers' lineup.

This season, World Peace has played in 70 of the Lakers’ 71 games and is averaging 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
