Marc Gasol injury: Grizzlies center returns from abdominal tear against Knicks

In a surprise return from an abdominal tear, Gasol will start for the Memphis Grizzlies against the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Memphis Grizzlies will get a surprise start from center Marc Gasol Wednesday night as they face the Knicks, according to Memphis sideline reporter Rob Fischer. Gasol has missed the last two games resting and rehabbing an abdominal tear and wasn't expected to play.

Coach Lionel Hollins dropped the bomb casually during the Grizzlies pregame media session, the Wall Street Journal's Chris Herring tweeted:

Gasol first injured his abdominal muscle on March 6, but he played through the pain and lack of mobility for nine games, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Last Friday, Gasol re-injured the abdominal against the New Orleans Hornets and has sat out since.

The team has remained quiet on the injury, only releasing that an ultrasound found the tear. It was unclear how soon Gasol would return, but the Commercial Appeal wrote Wednesday that Gasol believed he’d be back before the playoffs.

That could prove to be a big boost for the Grizzlies against the Knicks, who have been hit by injuries to their frontcourt players of late. Midseason signee and power forward Kenyon Martin has been the starting center for New York of late.
