Amar’e Stoudemire injury: Knicks big man hopes to be back for playoffs

Knicks big man Amar’e Stoudemire is hoping to return for the playoffs after right knee debridement surgery.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

New York Knicks big man Amar'e Stoudemire spoke to the media on Thursday, saying that there's no timetable for his return from right knee debridement surgery. Stoudemire is hoping to return for the playoffs, but if not, he wants to be back at 100 percent next season.

Stoudemire had the surgery in early March and was expected to miss six weeks. It was the second debridement surgery Stoudemire has had this year, as he had the procedure done on his other knee in October 2012. In addition to these two surgeries, he has had numerous other problems with his knees over the course of his career. And interestingly enough, the big man said Thursday “it was only a matter of time” before the knee became injured.

The Knicks have a bit of a dilemma on their hands with this situation. It would be nice to have Stoudemire ready for the playoffs, as he was starting to play really well before going down again. On the other hand, New York has learned to play pretty well without him, and working him back into the lineup right as the postseason starts could be an issue. Furthermore, the team certainly does not want to rush him back and risk further injury.
