Marcin Gortat injury: Suns center out at least 3-4 weeks with foot sprain

The Phoenix Suns will be without center Marcin Gortat after he sprained his foot on Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports

Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat will miss at least 3-4 weeks with a midfoot sprain, according to a team release, but he told The Arizona Republic's Paul Coro that he is doubtful to return this season. The right foot will be in a cast for three weeks because of a Lisfranc sprain but with the Suns' final game coming April 17 against the Denver Nuggets, a return could be held off until next season.

Gortat injured himself and left a game against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday with 36 seconds left in the first quarter. The Suns, who had won three in a row heading into the game, trailed the Raptors, 28-24, after the first quarter as Gortat had scored eight points, but after that, the offense suffered greatly.

Phoenix didn’t score more than 16 points in the second, third and fourth quarters as the Raptors won in Phoenix, 98-71. The absence of backup center Jermaine O’Neal, who is spending time with his daughter as she undergoes and recovers from heart surgery, compounded the loss of Gortat.

Gortat is averaging 11.1 points and 8.5 rebounds this year for the Suns (21-40). The loss puts even more pressure on point guard Goran Dragic, who was relying on Gortat in the pick-and-roll and struggled after his center left on Wednesday.
