Rockets will extend general manager Daryl Morey for 4 years

The Houston Rockets will extend general manager Daryl Morey’s contract for four years.

Bob Levey

The Houston Rockets and owner Leslie Alexander said Thursday that they have come to a verbal agreement to extend general manager Daryl Morey's contract for four years, according to Houston Fox 26 reporter Mark Berman. Currently under contract through 2013-14, Morey will be locked in through the 2017-18 season when the deal becomes official.

Morey, who has taken the league by storm with both his savvy and analytics background, has been one of the most active general managers in the NBA over the past year as he attempts to rebuild a franchise still on the rebound from the Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming era.

Most notably, he traded away scorer Kevin Martin, first-round draft choice Jeremy Lamb and three more future picks in exchange for Oklahoma City Thunder guard James Harden. Morey also signed unproven free agents Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik this past offseason.

Before the Feb. 21 trade deadline, Morey pulled off a couple of trades, shedding smaller salaries but in return getting draft picks and rookie forward Thomas Robinson, the 2012 draft's fifth overall pick, from the Sacramento Kings.

Houston is 33-29 this season and clinging to seventh place in the Western Conference.
