The San Antonio Spurs have waived veteran forward Stephen Jackson, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The move had been "brewing" for days, reports Wojnarowski, and finally came to be, as the Spurs released Jackson with only four games remaining in their season.

The San Antonio Spurs have released Stephen Jackson with just four games remaining in their regular season schedule.

According to Wojnarowski, coach Gregg Popovich and Jackson had been “sparring” over Jacksons’ role with the team throughout the season and it again became an issue. Wojnarowski also indicates that the two sides had previously discussed a release prior to the trade deadline, but eventually agreed to finish the season together.
Jackson will hit waivers, but it’s unlikely a team will look to add him. The deadline for players released after March 1st to be playoff eligible has passed, and he cannot play in the postseason.

Jackson played in 55 games for the Spurs this season and averaged 19.5 minutes and 6.2 points per game. He was also putting up some of the worst percentages he has over the last ten seasons, shooting only 27.1 percent from beyond the arc and 37.3 percent from the field overall.
With the playoffs just weeks away and Manu Ginobili battling a hamstring injury the Spurs thinned down their wing depth with the release.
