President of basketball operations Lon Babby has agreed with the Phoenix Suns to a two-year contract extension that will keep him in charge through the 2014-15 season, the team announced on Tuesday. With his deal ending this summer, owner Robert Sarver has given Babby his vote of confidence as the Suns attempt to move out of the doldrums of the post-Steve Nash era.

The Phoenix Suns signed president of basketball operations Lon Babby to a two-year deal.

Babby joined Phoenix with general manager Lance Blanks in the summer of 2010, and has yet to lead the Suns to a playoff berth. Clinging to an aging Nash, the Suns finally dealt their point guard to the Los Angeles Lakers this summer, and the result has been a 23-51 record this year.
Phoenix is on tap for its second-worst season in franchise history.
Blanks’ contract runs out next summer, and so far, the duo that took over for general manager Steve Kerr following the 2010 Western Conference Finals run has found little success.
Under the current management, Phoenix has drafted Markieff Morris and Kendall Marshall in the last few seasons. They have successful signings of starting point guard Goran Dragic and a trade that acquired center Marcin Gortat, but they've also committed a three-year, $18 million contract to Michael Beasley. Babby and Blanks also came to a parting with coach Alvin Gentry and filled his spot with Lindsey Hunter, who was previously a player development coordinator.
Hunter’s future in Phoenix received a boost with the news, as there’s a better chance that he’ll have a shot at the permanent head coaching position with the front office standing pat.
